Belmont sits between the Catawba and the South Fork, and that geography is the single most relevant fact for anything buried in the ground here. Proximity to water means a higher seasonal water table, and a drain field is only as good as the unsaturated soil beneath it.
Waterfront and near water lots are also the ones most likely to be older, larger and on a private system, and most likely to have been improved several times over the decades. A tank that served the original cottage may now be under a much larger house.
Any system this close to surface water has a stronger reason than usual to be working properly, which is worth remembering when a repair is being weighed against a replacement.
Renovations, additions and a tank that never grew
The pattern along this stretch is renovation. A modest older house gets extended, gets more bathrooms, gets a modern laundry and a dishwasher, and every one of those adds load to a tank and a field that were sized for the original house.
The system does not object immediately. It objects gradually, as a tank that no longer has time to settle solids starts passing them through to the field, which is the failure that costs real money.
If your house has been significantly extended since the system went in, that is worth raising. It changes what a technician is looking for when the lid comes off.
Landscaping over a drain field
Two things kill drain fields on nicely kept properties. Compaction and roots. Driving or parking on a field compresses the soil that the whole thing depends on, and it does not recover. Trees and large shrubs planted near a field send roots into the lines because that is where the water is.
Grass over a field is ideal. A patio, a driveway, a pool or a row of ornamental trees is not, and by the time the damage shows the landscaping is established and expensive.
If you know where your field runs, mark it somewhere you will find it again. If you do not know, that is the first thing to establish before anything gets built on it.

I called Ray's back at 8:50PM Friday night, and not only did they answer they talked to me for 10 minutes and methodically went through what to check. We discovered over the phone that the pump float had fallen off the pole and wasn't activating the pump. He described how to fix it over the phone and saved me a lot of money not having to have an emergency response. Unbelievable customer service, most folks would have charged me the service fee.
Andre came out and he was absolutely amazing. Very kind and honest. The prices they have are great but we would honestly be willing to pay more for the customer service.
