A submersible pump sits down the well and pushes water up. A pressure tank near the house holds a cushion of pressurized water so the pump is not switching on every time somebody runs a tap. A pressure switch decides when the pump runs. A sediment filter catches what the ground sends up with the water.
Every one of those is a part that fails on a schedule, and each one produces a different symptom. Low pressure everywhere, a pump that will not stop cycling, air spitting from taps, water that is fine one day and cloudy the next. Knowing which part to look at is most of the work.
Sizing matters more than brand. A pump too small for the depth will not deliver pressure to an upstairs bathroom, and a pump oversized for the yield will draw the well down and run itself dry.

There are required separation distances between a well and a septic drain field, and they exist for the obvious reason. On a property where both are going in, or where a failed system is being replaced near an existing well, that spacing constrains where each one can go.
It is one more argument for having the same company look at both. A septic contractor who does not think about the well can design a field that a well permit will not sit alongside, and the discovery happens at the worst possible moment.

I called Ray's back at 8:50PM Friday night, and not only did they answer they talked to me for 10 minutes and methodically went through what to check. We discovered over the phone that the pump float had fallen off the pole and wasn't activating the pump. He described how to fix it over the phone and saved me a lot of money not having to have an emergency response. Unbelievable customer service, most folks would have charged me the service fee.
